Context and Objectives

Nutricartes® are a tool for interactive nutrition education aimed at preventing childhood malnutrition or to treat children who already suffer from malnutrition.

1. CONTEXT

The structural causes of malnutrition are many : global warming, geopolitical and financial, poverty, speculation, lack of democracy, etc…

Also, an insufficiently mentioned cause, independent from poverty, is the lack of knowledge about the basic nutrition needs of children and pregnant or nursing women.

This problem has to be addressed through nutrition education of families whose behaviour is most likely to change once they learn about nutrition.
We need to offer them a learning method which fits their needs. This is the objective of the Nutricartes®.

2. OBJECTIF DES NUTRICARTES®

This method rests on knowledge and skills the participants already have. Exchanges between peers allow each of them to widen, reinforce or change these, and especially, to adopt them so as to memorise and experiment with them.

Used in small groups of about ten participants, the method is fun to use and creates a friendly atmosphere.

It presents the 4 pillars of good health for a child:

  • balanced meals
  • good hygiene
  • vaccinations
  • good relations within the family

It is based on 2 games, focusing on different themes ::
1. Diet : varied, balanced, adapted to the age and budget resources (Food cards)
2. Basic principles of good hygiene, initial care and attention given to children (Hygiene cards)

The messages are short, simple and concrete. They are reinforced through practical activities in the group whenever possible (meal preparation demonstrations, purification of the water, etc.).

3. PREREQUISITES NEEDED FOR SUCCESS WHEN USING THE NUTRICARTES® METHOD®

  • Well-trained persons to give the key messages in an effective, friendly, and warm atmosphere.
  • Small groups : ten participants maximum
  • Motivated participants who attend at least 5 training sessions

Thanks to the Nutricartes® Method, participants notice the positive effects on their children’s health, in balancing their budget, and very often, on the atmosphere within the family.
